Anti-Migrant Protests Erupt in Dover and Portsmouth

Hundreds of masked, black-clad protesters disrupted the arrival of asylum seekers in Portsmouth on Sunday, following a similar blockade in Dover on Saturday. In Portsmouth, approximately 200 demonstrators attempted to block coaches transporting around 120 to 140 migrants who had arrived via a small boat from France. The standoff resulted in injuries to several police officers and damage to official vehicles. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary reported that officers used batons and synthetic pepper spray to maintain order. No arrests have been made so far, though an investigation into assaults and criminal damage is ongoing.

The protests were organized by Daniel Thomas, known as Danny Tommo, a former associate of Tommy Robinson and founder of the Patriot Platform. This group describes itself as a Christian army of patriots seeking to reclaim British borders. Thomas livestreamed the Portsmouth event to thousands of viewers, while some reports indicate the group used maritime apps to track the progress of migrant boats. In Dover, the group blocked key roundabouts and the A20 road, causing significant traffic delays.

Government and political reactions varied. The Home Office and policing minister Sarah Jones condemned the behavior as intimidating and thuggish, stating that illegality would face the full force of the law. Jones attributed the community frustration to the previous Conservative government. Conversely, Reform UK MP Suella Braverman argued that residents in Hampshire are desperate and furious rather than far-right racists, describing the government's response to small boats as pathetic. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage stated the country is on the edge of serious civil disturbance, though he condemned the use of paramilitary uniforms and face coverings.

Outlets with a center-left lean framed the events as a dangerous escalation of far-right vigilantism and a wake-up call regarding clandestine mobilization. Center-leaning outlets focused more on the disruption to public order and the official government condemnation of the protesters.
