Argentine Government Coordinates Legislative Push for Land Law and Economic Reforms

The Argentine government held a political meeting at the Casa Rosada to coordinate its legislative strategy for August, focusing on a Senate session scheduled for Thursday. The primary objective is to pass the Inviolability of Private Property project, which includes modifications to the Land Law. This initiative aims to strengthen tools against illegal property occupations and flexibilize restrictions on foreign land ownership to facilitate investment. While a center-left source frames this as a strategic legislative offensive to show unity under Karina Milei, a center-right source highlights the difficulty of the process, noting that the project has undergone 17 drafts after five failed attempts in the chamber. To secure necessary votes, the government has reportedly shifted from a proposal of total deregulation to a compromise that would increase the foreign ownership limit from 15 percent to 25 percent of provincial territory. Simultaneously, singer Lali Esposito has used social media to call for protests against the Land Law, urging followers to defend strategic resources and national sovereignty. Beyond the Land Law, the government plans to bring two economic projects to the Chamber of Deputies by mid August: a modification of the Fiscal Innocence regime to encourage the declaration of savings and a reform of the Central Bank Charter to limit its ability to finance the Treasury. As part of these efforts, Chief of Cabinet Diego Santilli and Economy Minister Luis Caputo are traveling to Catamarca to meet with governors Raúl Jalil and Elías Suárez.
