Argentine Opposition and Government Clash Over Disability and Debt Legislation

The Argentine Chamber of Deputies is set to debate two contentious issues: the extension of the disability emergency and projects addressing family debt and delinquency. While the opposition initially sought to force the debate by securing a quorum of 129 members, the libertarian officialist block later decided to provide the necessary quorum themselves to avoid a political blow and maintain control of the legislative agenda. The disability emergency, which expires at the end of the year, includes provisions for non contributory pensions and the regularization of debts for service providers. Regarding family debt, the opposition has proposed measures such as mandatory refinancing and the removal of punitive interest, though some sources indicate a transversal agreement to avoid projects that create fiscal costs for the state.

Disagreement remains over the timeline for these debates. The officialism proposed a schedule to issue reports by September 23 for disability and September 30 for debt. However, opposition members expressed distrust, suggesting the government may be attempting to delay the process until the Budget discussion. The session is expected to focus on establishing firm deadlines for the relevant commissions to produce final texts for floor discussion.
