An armed man was arrested Sunday after charging toward Democratic candidate for Ohio governor Amy Acton during a campaign stop at the Canfield Fair. The suspect, identified as 38 year old Patrick Havas, forced his way through a crowd and knocked over multiple people, including two elderly adults, as he moved toward Acton. Law enforcement recovered two pistols, a taser, and brass knuckles from Havas, although the Mahoning County Sheriff's Office stated that no weapons were brandished or removed from their holsters. Havas was booked on charges of disorderly conduct and two counts of assault.
Acton, a physician and former public health director, was unharmed in the incident. Witnesses and reports indicate that she provided medical assistance to at least one of the injured individuals after the suspect was subdued by security and state troopers. Former Democratic Representative John Boccieri, who witnessed the event, noted that Havas appeared to be filming with a cell phone as he barreled through the tent.
Republican Governor Mike DeWine and Acton's Republican opponent, Vivek Ramaswamy, both condemned the incident. Ramaswamy's campaign called the event completely unacceptable, stating that candidates should be able to meet voters without fear of violence. Democratic Senator Mark Kelly also spoke out against political violence, describing Acton as tough.
