The junta led by General Abdourahamane Tiani has reaffirmed its authority following a short lived mutiny within the Nigerien army. In the aftermath of the event, arrests have increased. Detainees include political figures and soldiers, such as former defence minister Kalla Moutari. Additionally, former RFI journalist Moussa Kaka is reported missing. On 2 September, several thousand people gathered for a rally in Niamey to support General Tiani. Participants wore T-shirts with the junta leader's image and waved Russian flags while chanting slogans against imperialists. Reports indicate that Russia and Algeria play essential roles in Niger.
