Assam man accused of beheading wife dies after jumping from police vehicle

Ramanuj Goswami, a 30 year old man accused of decapitating his wife, died in the early hours of Monday after jumping from a police vehicle in Guwahati, Assam. Police officials stated that Goswami was being transported to or from the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for a medical examination when he jumped from the vehicle. Some reports specify that he fell into a gorge near the Narakashur Pahar area and suffered severe head injuries. He was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

Goswami had surrendered on September 6 after allegedly killing his 25 year old wife, Riya Talukdar, on September 3. Authorities reported that the severed head and fingers of the victim were found wrapped in a polythene bag inside a refrigerator at their residence. Police said the motive was a fit of rage over an alleged extra marital affair. During his remand, Goswami reportedly told police he felt no regret for the killing and that he had been intoxicated at the time. The victim's family alleged that Goswami had a history of drug addiction and a prior arrest for financial fraud.
