At least 14 people were killed and 11 others wounded on Wednesday following an explosion at a temporary weapons depot near the city of Sarmada in Syria's northwestern Idlib province. The site was used to store weapons and remnants from the country's long running civil war before they could be transported elsewhere, according to the Syrian Defense Ministry. The ministry further noted that some of its own personnel were among the injured.
Emergency responders and firefighting teams were deployed to the scene, but secondary explosions and fires hampered their efforts to extinguish the blaze. Thick smoke billowed from the site for several hours while teams searched for survivors trapped under rubble. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the initial blast.
This incident is the second fatal explosion of its kind in the Idlib province this month. On September 1, a vehicle carrying ammunition exploded in the city of Binnish, killing five people and wounding others. Syria has recently emerged from more than a decade of civil war, a period during which Idlib was one of the hardest hit regions.
