At least 25 people, primarily children and teenagers, died on Saturday night after a bus plunged approximately 30 meters into a ravine on Fogo Island in Cape Verde. The vehicle was carrying 32 passengers returning to Sao Filipe following an excursion near the Pico do Fogo volcano. Several other people were injured, some in critical condition. The driver was among the deceased.
Witnesses reported that a tire burst, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. Rescue efforts were complicated by the rocky and inaccessible terrain of the crash site. Local reports indicate that 20 people died at the scene and five died in the hospital, with seven victims buried immediately due to the condition of their bodies.
While some reports describe the trip as a student excursion, a delegate from the Education Ministry clarified that the trip was not organized by schools. Instead, it was an annual gift organized by the driver for the students he transported during the school year. President Jose Maria Pereira Neves described the event as a great catastrophe.
Cape Verde is an archipelago of approximately 550,000 inhabitants located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Senegal. Authorities noted that major traffic accidents are rare in the country, as roads are generally well maintained.
