At least 25 people were killed on Monday night when armed men stormed the village of Bin-Per in the Mangu local government area of Nigeria's Plateau state. Perpetrators reportedly moved from house to house killing residents with machetes, with women and children accounting for most of the victims. The attack followed a cycle of reprisals, including the killing of two herders last week and a subsequent attack on the village of Maitimbe where multiple houses were torched.
Local advocacy groups and officials have criticized the government's response. The Mwaghavul Youth Movement accused authorities of failing to protect vulnerable communities, while Matthew Kwarpo, a representative in the Plateau state assembly, called for proactive measures to prevent further escalation. Amnesty International estimated in May 2025 that at least 2,630 people had been killed in Plateau state since President Bola Tinubu took office.
The violence is part of a long term conflict between nomadic Muslim ethnic Fulani herders and mainly Christian farmers over scarce land and resources in the Middle Belt region. Contributing factors include land grabbing over mineral resources, political tensions, and the influence of hardline preachers.
