At least 35,000 more people died during Europe's four record breaking heatwaves this summer than would normally be expected. These figures are based on incomplete data covering barely half of the continent, and experts suggest the final toll will rise significantly once August data is consolidated. In Germany, France, and Spain alone, excess mortality has already exceeded 25,000 cases.
Germany reported the highest death toll, with an estimated 14,000 heat related deaths between April 6 and August 9. The Robert Koch Institute noted that nearly 10,000 of those deaths occurred during a single week from June 22 to 28. Spain recorded 4,947 heat attributable deaths between May and the time of reporting, making it the worst year on record for the country. France reported 7,300 all cause excess deaths between late May and July 22.
Meteorological records were shattered across Western Europe since May. France recorded its hottest national average day on record, while Germany saw three consecutive days of record breaking temperatures in late June. Spain experienced persistent highs above 42 degrees Celsius. In contrast, data from Hungary did not show significant excess mortality during the late June and early July heatwaves.
Scientists state that human made global heating is increasing the frequency and intensity of these extreme events. Because heat often aggravates pre existing conditions like cardiovascular disease, it is rarely listed as the direct cause of death, necessitating the use of modeling to estimate the toll.
