At Least 35 Dead After Ferry Fire in the Philippines

At least 35 people have died following a fire on a passenger ferry off the coast of Palawan province in the Philippines. The vessel, named the MV June Aster, was traveling from the capital city of Manila to Coron on Wednesday evening when a loud explosion occurred in the cargo hold, according to survivor reports. The ship was approximately two kilometers from the coast at the time of the incident.

Coast Guard officials reported that the fire took roughly 30 hours to extinguish before personnel could board the ship. On Friday, 30 bodies were recovered from the vessel. While initial reports cited five casualties, the death toll has since risen to 35. There were approximately 130 to 134 people on board, consisting of 117 passengers and 17 crew members. Forty three people were rescued, while more than 50 remain missing.

Rescue efforts involved the Coast Guard, the fire department, and other regional ships. Investigators are looking into potential safety violations, including whether the ship was overloaded or if all passengers had life jackets.
