At least 50 people died on Thursday after an overloaded boat capsized in a river in Sokoto state, northwestern Nigeria. Local authorities and residents reported that a significant number of the victims were children, with one official from the National Inland Waterways Authority confirming that approximately 40 children were among the dead. The passengers were reportedly traveling to farms to plant or harvest rice when the vessel sank shortly after departing.
Rescue operations were launched by the National Emergency Management Agency. A former local councilor stated that 46 bodies had been buried and five more had been recovered from the river. Another resident noted that the death toll continued to rise as more bodies were found.
