At least five people died and five others were injured on Sunday after an Amazon Air cargo plane overshot the runway during landing at Miami International Airport. The aircraft, a 32 year old Boeing 767-300 operated by 21 Air, arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico, around 2 p.m. local time. Authorities report that the plane barreled off the runway, crossed a perimeter fence, and struck multiple vehicles on a nearby roadway before bursting into flames. Three of the injured are reported to be in critical condition.

Emergency response involved more than 60 units and approximately 200 personnel from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. Fire Chief Ray Jadallah stated that rescue teams performed complex extrications to free the pilot and co-pilot from the cockpit, as well as individuals trapped inside or under vehicles. Specialized hazardous materials units were deployed to control a fuel leak and shut down the aircraft engines using firefighting foam.

The accident caused significant disruptions at the airport during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. A total ground stop was enacted, leading to the delay or cancellation of approximately 200 to 300 flights. While some runways were reopened by Sunday evening, the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have launched investigations into the cause of the runway excursion.

Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel stated that the company is working closely with local authorities to understand the incident and expressed deep sympathy for the victims and their families. Flight data from Flightradar24 indicated the aircraft was traveling at approximately 207 km/h as it exited the usable portion of the runway.
