At least seven people died and 23 remain missing after a passenger ferry capsized off the coast of Northern Cyprus on Sunday. The vessel, identified as the Filo Jet, was carrying 267 people, including 259 passengers and eight crew members, when it rolled over shortly after departing from the port of Kyrenia. The ferry was traveling to the Turkish port of Tasucu in Mersin province. Authorities reported that 237 people were rescued alive, while some sources noted that survivors were seen clinging to the orange hull of the overturned vessel. The ship eventually sank to a depth of 514 meters, according to local officials.
Search and rescue operations involved the Northern Cyprus Coast Guard, Turkish naval units, and several private vessels. The incident occurred in the territory of the self proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which is recognized only by Turkey. The region has been divided from the Republic of Cyprus since 1974.
