August Recorded as Hottest Month Ever Globally

August was the hottest single month ever recorded globally, according to data from the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service. The global average air temperature for the month was 16.96 degrees Celsius, surpassing the previous record set in July 2023 by 0.01 degrees Celsius. Copernicus noted that the two months are considered joint highest due to the narrow difference. Global sea surface temperatures also reached new daily highs and tied for the hottest August on record.

The record heat capped a summer of extremes. The contiguous United States experienced its hottest summer on record, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Western Europe also saw its warmest summer, surpassing a record set in 2003. In Europe, researchers estimate that heat waves in Germany, France, and Spain caused as many as 35,000 deaths, while wildfires raged across parts of the continent and North America.

Scientists attribute these trends to human activity, specifically the burning of fossil fuels, which has warmed the planet by approximately 1.4 degrees Celsius since preindustrial times. This warming is being compounded by a strengthening El Nino weather pattern in the Pacific Ocean. Experts expect records to continue falling as the El Nino approaches peak intensity, with some predicting that this year or next may become the hottest years ever observed.
