Scientists from the University of Queensland and the University of New South Wales have developed cyborg cockroaches designed to assist in life saving missions following disasters such as earthquakes. These creatures, dubbed paraborgs, are equipped with small cameras and injection devices to help human rescuers locate survivors and deliver medication to people trapped under rubble or in caves. According to a study published in the journal Advanced Science, the researchers used giant cockroaches from North Queensland that can grow up to 8.5 centimeters. These insects were chosen because they are large enough to carry the necessary equipment and possess mobility, resilience, and low energy requirements that current robots cannot match. In experiments, a camera equipped cockroach first located targets, followed by a second cockroach equipped with a catapult like syringe mechanism. This second insect could administer injections with 95 percent efficiency when within 15 centimeters of the target. Lead researcher Hai Nhan Le acknowledged that while the sight of a giant cockroach might be unpleasant, the technology could be a matter of life and death for trapped individuals. The researchers stated that the insects are kept in appropriate conditions with food consisting of apples and dry eucalyptus leaves, and they ensure the insects feel no pain during interventions.
