Austria Announces 240 Million Euro Drought Aid Package for Farmers

The Austrian government has announced a 240 million euro aid package to support farmers facing the worst drought since records began in 1850. Agriculture Minister Norbert Totschnig stated that the drought has affected nearly all crops and caused total damages exceeding one billion euros. The relief package includes 140 million euros in waived social security contributions, as well as interest subsidies, investment aid, and support for drought insurance premiums. These measures aim to ensure liquidity for farmers to purchase seeds, fertilizer, and animal feed. The Austrian Hail Insurance company noted that while damages are high, 400 million euros are covered by insurance. The government is also encouraging more farmers to secure insurance, as currently only 80 percent of arable farms and 40 percent of grassland farms are covered. While the center left framing emphasizes the broader European climate crisis and the demands of environmental groups for climate adaptation, the center right framing focuses on the political agreement linking this aid to a new climate law. Under this agreement, the coalition of the ÖVP, SPÖ, and Neos will work toward a climate roadmap to achieve climate neutrality by 2040, which is ten years ahead of the European Union target of 2050.
