Austria Dismantles International Network Supplying Russian Arms Industry

Austria's intelligence agency has uncovered an international network used to circumvent European Union sanctions to supply Russian cruise missiles and fighter jets. According to the Austrian Interior Ministry, a shell company based in Austria was established to export sanctioned goods to Russia. These goods included specialized metalworking tools and computer controlled cutters used for mass production. The network utilized intermediary countries such as Belarus, Hong Kong, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Poland, South Korea, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates to move the equipment. European manufacturers were misled via forged end user certificates into believing the goods would remain in third countries, when they were actually destined for companies affiliated with Rostec, a Russian state owned conglomerate. Since 2022, deliveries to Russian arms manufacturers totaled 3.3 million euros. A Belarusian citizen who served as the managing director and co owner of the Austrian shell company was arrested on May 13, and authorities seized property worth 140,000 euros. The investigation included a search and seizure operation in August 2025 that resulted in the recovery of 40 data storage devices. Austrian State Secretary Jorg Leichtfried stated that it is unacceptable for European technology to be channeled into the production of air defense systems and cruise missiles. Separately, Canada's Foreign Ministry announced on August 10 that it would join Ukraine and Europe in imposing sanctions on the Russian defense manufacturer Streit Group to disrupt its ability to supply military technology.
