A drone carrying 800 grams of Semtex military explosive struck a Ukrainian Antonov cargo plane at Leipzig airport on August 4. The quadcopter hit the aircraft near its fuel tanks and wing before falling to the ground; however, the explosive charge detached during the collision and failed to detonate. The incident occurred at a hub where munitions deliveries to Ukraine had been processed the previous day. Investigators found DNA on the drone that reportedly matches samples from a July 2024 sabotage attempt involving a firebomb on a DHL plane at the same airport.
US intelligence officials believe the Russian government and its secret services were behind the attack, citing the military origin of the explosives. While German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the event as a professional hybrid threat scenario and a new level of danger, the German government has not officially accused Moscow. Russia has denied involvement, calling the allegations a provocation. In response to the breach, the German interior ministry plans to double its federal anti drone expert team to 300 members and increase operational bases from four to eight.
Additional security concerns emerged the same night when a DHL cargo plane collided with what investigators believe was a second hostile drone while climbing away from the airport. A day later, drones were detected over a western German army installation that houses components for US made Patriot air defence systems. The event takes place amid upcoming elections in eastern German states where support for military aid to Kyiv is a point of contention.
