The Bayeux tapestry has arrived at the British Museum in London for a historic loan decided by French President Emmanuel Macron. The 11th century masterpiece, which is nearly 70 meters long, will be on public display from September 10 until July 11, 2027. French Culture Minister Catherine Pégard confirmed that a detailed centimeter by centimeter examination by French and British experts revealed the rupture of two threads in two small areas. However, Pégard stated that there was no major degradation and that the work remains in essentially the same condition as it was before leaving Bayeux.
The transfer across the English Channel in mid July was considered high risk by heritage defenders and experts who feared irreversible damage to the fragile textile. President Macron recently visited the exhibition with King Charles III to celebrate the ties between France and the United Kingdom. The tapestry is scheduled to return to France in July 2027 for a restoration that has been postponed several times.
