Belarus Builds Railway Infrastructure Near Ukrainian Border Capable of Military Transport

Belarus is constructing new railway infrastructure in the southern Gomel region that is capable of receiving military trains. According to project documentation obtained by the Belarusian Railway Workers' Community, a separate railway siding is being built near the Yakimovka station, which is located approximately 40 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. The facility is officially designated as a training ground in Gomel Oblast.

The planned track can accommodate up to 60 railcars, a capacity comparable to a military train. The project includes a high loading platform with ramps designed to allow the unloading of wheeled and tracked vehicles directly into the facility. This infrastructure would enable military trains to move from the national rail network onto the training ground to unload personnel, weapons, fuel, and ammunition without remaining on public station tracks.

The project's customer is listed as Belarus' Institute Voenproekt, while earlier documents named the Belarusian Armed Forces' capital construction administration. The Belarusian Railway Workers' Community stated that while this construction does not inherently indicate preparations for an offensive, it would allow for the rapid reinforcement of military groupings in the area.

Ukraine's State Border Guard Service spokesperson, Andrii Demchenko, told the Kyiv Independent that Belarus continues to develop military infrastructure and frequently uses such activity to generate information pressure. He noted that while Russia views Belarusian territory as a potential direction to expand aggression, there are currently not enough Russian troops in Belarus to form a significant strike grouping. Ukraine continues to strengthen defensive positions and mine barriers along its northern border. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously warned in June that Russia might attempt to involve Belarus more deeply in the war as the country completes military roads and depots near the border.
