The procedure involved the implantation of a valve or shunt to drain excess cerebrospinal fluid and relieve intracranial pressure. Joel stated that the surgery has improved his memory, balance, and general ability to function in daily life.
The singer was diagnosed with the condition in May 2025. He noted that his career playing loud rock and roll music caused him to experience something similar to a concussion during every concert, which aggravated his symptoms. These neurological issues affected his vision, hearing, and balance, leading him to cancel scheduled performances in North America and the United Kingdom. While he initially hesitated to have the surgery, he eventually decided to proceed after researching the benefits.
Joel reassured his fans that he is recovering well and told them not to worry. His most recent full concert took place in February 2025, although he made a surprise appearance at a Turnstile show in Wellington, Florida, in January. He previously concluded a ten year residency at Madison Square Garden in 2024, where he performed 100 shows.
