BJP Outlines Strategy for Punjab Assembly Polls Amid Regional Political Tensions

The BJP is preparing a comprehensive campaign for the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections, which are likely to take place in February of next year. The party plans to focus on three primary issues: crime, corruption, and chitta, which refers to drug abuse. According to a senior BJP leader, the strategy will also emphasize caste issues to appeal to the state's Scheduled Caste population, which exceeds 30 percent. The party intends to make the youth a central focus by highlighting unemployment and alleged increases in extortion cases. Additionally, the BJP plans to conduct a positive outreach campaign centered on the Dalit saint Sant Ravidas.

As part of its offensive, the BJP intends to target the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government over allegations of links to pro-Khalistan elements and the current law and order situation. The party also seeks to revive attacks on the Congress party regarding the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. To support these efforts, a statewide program linked to the Centre's Nasha Mukt Bharat initiative is expected to be led by Union Home Minister Amit Shah between September 18 and 30. The BJP is also weighing a possible alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) following a recent meeting between SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In a separate regional development, a spokesperson for the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee has accused the BJP of attempting to engineer communal flare-ups between Hindus and Muslims ahead of the 2028 Assembly polls in Karnataka. This allegation follows a BJP protest in T. Narsipur town, where the Congress spokesperson claimed BJP leaders were fanning communalism for political gain.
