Bolivia and Brazil announced a joint border security plan on Thursday to strengthen security along their shared border of over 3,400 kilometers. Launched in the city of Guayaramerín, the initiative includes the permanent deployment of specialized units and elite Bolivian Police troops in Cobija, Guayaramerín, Puerto Suárez, San Ignacio, and San Matías. The plan aims to identify and dismantle transnational criminal groups involved in drug trafficking, smuggling, and human trafficking.
Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz stated that the strategy is necessary to recover territorial sovereignty and ensure a border that produces and progresses. The announcement follows a surge in violence in the Santa Cruz department, where ten murders occurred in less than a week. Bolivian authorities attributed these killings to a power struggle between two Brazilian criminal groups, the Comando Vermelho and the Primer Comando de la Capital (PCC).
