Brazilian Federal Police Investigate Alleged Influence Peddling Involving President Lula's Son

The Brazilian Federal Police are investigating Fábio Luís Lula da Silva, the eldest son of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, for suspected corruption and influence peddling. Investigators are examining whether Fábio Luís, known as Lulinha, maintained an informal or hidden partnership with lobbyist Roberta Luchsinger and businessman Fernando Bittar to facilitate private interests within federal agencies. The probes cover multiple areas, including attempts to secure a contract with the Ministry of Health for canabidiol medications and dealings involving the government technology company Dataprev.

Evidence cited by the police includes intercepted messages in which Luchsinger describes her and Lulinha as being one thing in business. In one exchange, Luchsinger allegedly claimed she refused a government position offered by President Lula to remain dedicated to her partnership with Lulinha and Bittar. The Federal Police also identified a WhatsApp group named Musaranhos used to discuss projects and negotiations. Reports indicate that Lulinha may have acted as a strategic reference to open doors while avoiding direct public exposure.

Further investigations involve Marco Aurélio Santana Ribeiro, known as Marcola, the former chief of staff to the president. The police found evidence of payments made by Luchsinger to Marcola for personal expenses, including jewelry and bank loans, totaling 217,000 reais. Marcola has admitted to receiving the funds but characterized them as a personal loan paid with interest.

The defense for Fábio Luís Lula da Silva has denied any wrongdoing, stating there is no evidence of misappropriation of public funds. His lawyers have described the leaks of the investigation as criminal and politically motivated attempts to influence the electoral process. The Ministry of Health stated that the canabidiol product is not on the official SUS list and was never a candidate for public procurement.
