Brazilian President Lula Calls for Transparency Amid Supreme Court Crisis

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has called for full transparency and the lifting of secrecy surrounding investigations into the Banco Master case, stating that any Supreme Court justices found guilty of crimes must pay. The crisis involves alleged links between Justice Alexandre de Moraes and disgraced banker Daniel Vorcaro, who is accused of massive fraud. The situation escalated into a conflict between Justice Moraes and Justice Andre Mendonca, a Bolsonaro appointee. The dispute recently involved the suspension and subsequent reinstatement of Federal Police Director Andrei Rodrigues, leading Supreme Court President Edson Fachin to intervene by suspending conflicting rulings and removing Moraes from the relatorship of the Fake News inquiry.

During an interview with SBT, President Lula argued that the court must recover its prestige and credibility. He proposed a debate on implementing limited mandates for Supreme Court justices to prevent lifelong appointments and conflicts of interest. Lula criticized selective leaks of information and urged that investigations reach everyone regardless of rank, from the president of the court to the president of the republic. Justice Mendonca subsequently lifted the secrecy of the Banco Master investigations following a request from President Fachin.

The political fallout has been significant. Senator Flavio Bolsonaro has used the scandal to call for the removal of Justice Moraes. Meanwhile, a group of approximately 3,000 business organizations issued a manifesto warning that the institutional crisis threatens legal certainty and social peace in Brazil.
