Jeremy Thomas, the distinguished British independent film producer known for 'The Last Emperor', has died at the age of 77. A representative confirmed that he passed away on Friday at his country home in Oxfordshire, England, surrounded by his family and loved ones.
Over a career spanning more than five decades, Thomas produced over 80 films. He is widely recognized for his collaboration with acclaimed auteurs such as David Cronenberg, Bernardo Bertolucci, and Nagisa Oshima. His most notable achievement came in 1988 when 'The Last Emperor' won the Oscar for best picture. Other significant works in his filmography include 'Sexy Beast', 'Crash', 'A Dangerous Method', and 'Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence'.
Born into a cinematic family, Thomas was the son of director Ralph Thomas and the nephew of director Gerald Thomas. He began his career as an assistant editor on films such as 'The Harder They Come' and 'Family Life'. He earned his first producer credit in 1976 with 'Mad Dog Morgan'. In 1978, he founded the Recorded Pictures Company, which released 'Bad Timing', a film that won the Grand Prix du Jury at the Cannes Film Festival.
Beyond producing, Thomas served as the chair of the British Film Institute and received a Bafta for outstanding British contribution to cinema. He also directed the 1999 film 'All the Little Animals'. His life and career were the subject of a documentary titled 'The Storms of Jeremy Thomas'.
His final projects include 'Bucking Fastard', which premiered at the Venice Film Festival this year, and 'Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo', a collaboration with director Takashi Miike scheduled to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
