British newlyweds and pilot killed in helicopter crash on Greek island

A young British couple on their honeymoon and their Greek pilot died on Monday when their helicopter crashed on the island of Sifnos. The victims have been identified as Alexander Cromie, a vice president at Blackstone, and Marie Ebert, a senior specialist at Bain & Company. The aircraft, a privately chartered Bell 206, crashed and exploded just meters from a landing pad shortly before its scheduled landing time of 18:15 local time.

Witnesses and local officials reported hearing a strange or bizarre engine noise coming from the aircraft before it fell. Greek authorities are investigating the cause of the accident, with some sources indicating a focus on a possible mechanical fault or engine failure. The pilot, identified as 53 year old Giorgos Raikos, was a former air force officer described as extremely experienced. Following the incident, Greece's civil aviation authority reportedly recalled all Bell 206 helicopters until further notice.

The crash occurred as the couple traveled from the village of Markopoulo near Athens to Sifnos. Firefighters extinguished a blaze at the scene, and the wreckage was described by the deputy mayor of Sifnos as having almost nothing left. The British Foreign Office confirmed it is providing consular support to the families. While center and center left reports agree on the tragic nature of the event, the center left framing places a stronger emphasis on the suspected mechanical failure and the subsequent grounding of similar aircraft models.
