Bronze Age Gold Treasure Stolen in Rapid Raid on Villena Museum

Thieves stole nearly the entire Treasure of Villena, one of the world's most significant Bronze Age gold collections, during a rapid early morning raid on a museum in eastern Spain on Thursday. The alarm triggered around 5:20 a.m. but the perpetrators had already exited the building within four minutes. Officials described the operation as ultra professional. The thieves reportedly entered through a window using several vehicles. Authorities are investigating whether a separate alarm at a local sports facility shortly before the heist was a diversion.

The collection, discovered in 1963 by archaeologist Jose Maria Soler, dates to between 1300 and 1000 BCE. It consisted of more than 50 objects, including 11 bowls, three bottles, and 28 to 29 bracelets. While the historical value is considered incalculable, the mayor of Villena, Fulgencio Cerdan, estimated the gold alone to be worth approximately 1.7 million euros. Some pieces were crafted from iron that originated from a meteorite. Only a few items remained, including three silver vessels, a bracelet, an earring, and one of four crowns.

City officials insisted that all security systems functioned correctly and there was no failure by the museum. This event follows a series of high profile museum thefts across Europe. Recent incidents include a heist at the Louvre in Paris last October, as well as thefts from museums in Sicily and near Parma in Italy. Other notable thefts mentioned include the 2017 theft of the Big Maple Leaf coin from Berlin and the 2019 raid on the Green Vault in Dresden.
