Brussels prosecutors are sounding the alarm over a surge in firearm violence in the Belgian capital. Prosecutor Julien Moinil stated on Friday that anyone can be hit by a bullet. Recent incidents include multiple attacks using automatic weapons, including one targeting a police station. According to Moinil, approximately 170 firearm incidents have been recorded in Brussels since 2025, with 69 of those occurring this year alone. Two people were killed in these acts of violence.
Moinil attributed most of the attacks to turf wars between rival drug gangs. He called for a tougher crackdown, specifically requesting the arrest of gang leaders who are often located abroad. He also emphasized that authorities must prevent incarcerated leaders from organizing further violence from within prison and noted that police require more resources for their investigations.
Belgium serves as a primary entry point for drug smuggling into Europe, with the port of Antwerp acting as a central hub. In Brussels, authorities have closed around 350 bars and restaurants due to drug trade links and have seized 3,500 luxury cars since 2025.
