BSW Holds Key Role Following Sachsen Anhalt Election Deadlock

The governing coalition of the CDU, SPD, and FDP has lost its majority following the landtag election in Sachsen Anhalt. The CDU and SPD now hold only 23 of the 83 seats, while the FDP failed to regain entry into the parliament. Neither the AfD nor the combined opposition of the CDU, SPD, Greens, and Left party holds a majority of mandates. Consequently, the BSW, which entered the parliament with five representatives, is positioned to exert significant influence over the formation of the new government. The BSW representatives include Thomas Schulze, John Lucas Dittrich, Claudia Wittig, Margitta Kriebel, and Michael Reim. While some members have expressed openness to talks with all parties, the BSW generally follows the line of founder Sahra Wagenknecht, who rejects coalitions with established parties but does not rule out all forms of cooperation with the AfD. The parliament must now constitute itself within 30 days. Legal complexities remain regarding the election of the Landtag president and the establishment of the rules of procedure, as the AfD is the largest faction. Current Minister President Sven Schulze and his cabinet will remain in office in a caretaker capacity until a successor is elected. A center left source framed the result as a wake up call for the CDU, highlighting internal warnings against maintaining the status quo and expressing annoyance at the SPD reaction.
