The 31st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) will take place from October 6 to October 15, featuring its largest official selection since 2019. Organizers announced on Tuesday that the festival will screen 246 official selections from 59 countries, including 95 world premieres. One source reports the total number of films screened across all sections will be 315.
This year marks a significant milestone as the festival is now an Oscar qualifying event. The winner of the Busan Award for best film now qualifies for submission for the Academy Award for best international feature, placing BIFF alongside other A list festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, and Venice.
The festival will hold its second annual Competition section featuring 14 Asian films. Organizers noted that the quality and range of submissions for this category have increased since the previous year. Additionally, the Icons section will feature a record number of works by renowned filmmakers, including Cristian Mungiu's "Fjord" and Ryusuke Hamaguchi's "All of a Sudden.
Animation is a primary focus for this edition. The festival will showcase 14 animated titles and a special 13 film exhibition of lesser known Japanese animations. Director Kim Jong kwan's "The Table: Day and Night" is scheduled to open the festival.
High profile guests attending the event include Maggie Gyllenhaal, Isabelle Huppert, Zhou Xun, and Fan Bingbing. Michelle Yeoh will receive the Asian Filmmaker of the Year award, while Hong Kong director Ann Hui will be honored with the Camellia Award for her contributions to empowering women in the industry. Other attending directors include Majid Majidi, Hirokazu Kore eda, and Tsai Ming liang.
To accommodate more viewers, the festival will open on a Tuesday this year instead of Wednesday. Organizers also plan to increase the number of daily screenings from Thursday through Sunday.
