Canadian Liberals Sweep Three By-Elections Amid Trade Conflict With United States

Following the collapse, the U.S. imposed 50 percent tariffs on approximately 20 billion dollars of Canadian goods, and Canada responded with its own counter tariffs. In Quebec, the district of Chicoutimi-Le Fjord is particularly exposed to these measures due to its aluminum industry.

Mark Carney described the results as a vote of confidence in his government's plan during a consequential time for the country. Polls from Abacus Data and Nik Nanos indicate a rise in Carney's personal popularity and government approval, which analysts attribute to a rally around his decision to end trade talks with the White House.

The results represent a significant setback for Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre. In Chicoutimi-Le Fjord, the Conservative vote share dropped from approximately 34 to 41 percent in the 2025 general election to around 12.5 percent on Monday. Some observers described the result as a blow to Poilievre's leadership and his ability to navigate the current political climate.

Center right sources frame the event as a reinforcement of the government and a crisis for the Conservative opposition.
