Cathay Pacific and Google are expanding their artificial intelligence trials aimed at reducing the climate impact of aircraft contrails. The second phase of the project, conducted in partnership with the non governmental organization Contrails.org, will focus on ultra long haul routes across Asia and the transpacific region. According to Kemal Armada, a product manager for climate and AI at Google, contrails form when aircraft fly through cold and humid air, trapping heat and accounting for approximately one third of the climate impact caused by aviation. Early tests reportedly reduced the warming impact of these contrails by about 40 percent. Michael Yue, managing director and general manager at Google Hong Kong, stated that Cathay Pacific is the first commercial airline in the Asia Pacific region to test this technology in live operations and the first globally to test contrail avoidance on ultra long haul routes. The initiative seeks to use predictive AI to find scalable and cost effective ways to mitigate aviation's effect on the climate.
