The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is seeking applications from researchers to establish the World Trade Center Youth Research Coordinating Center. This initiative will identify and track a Youth Research Cohort consisting of individuals who were 21 years old or younger, or in utero, and living below 14th Street in Manhattan or anywhere in Brooklyn on or after September 11, 2001. The study will also recruit a cohort of unexposed individuals of similar ages for comparison.
Congress announced funding for the study in 2022 to address gaps in medical knowledge. While government funded health studies were available for first responders and adults, very few children were enrolled in those programs. Consequently, scientists say there has been no systematic means of tracking chronic illnesses, such as cardiovascular diseases, reproductive health outcomes, and cancers, that may emerge as these individuals reach their 30s and early 40s. Until now, data on childhood exposure has been limited to small studies.
A CDC spokesperson stated that the agency expects to spend up to 50 million dollars in total program funding, with an estimated project start date of July 1, 2027. Members of the public can register online for updates and notification regarding enrollment.
Medical experts note that recruiting participants may be challenging because the affected individuals are now adults spread across the United States. Dr. Joan Reibman and Dr. Leigh Wilson of the World Trade Center Environmental Health Center suggested that studying this group could provide insights into preventive measures for children currently living in war zones.
