Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay Marks 100 Days in Office in Tamil Nadu

Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has completed 100 days in office after leading the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to victory in the 2026 Assembly election. The TVK won 108 seats and formed a coalition government with the Congress, VCK, and IUML, marking the first time in decades that neither the DMK nor the AIADMK led the state government. To mark the milestone, the administration released a report titled “100 Days of Governance, A Government for Generations” detailing its achievements.

Early policy actions included the implementation of 200 units of free electricity for eligible households, the creation of a dedicated women's safety force, and the establishment of anti-narcotics task forces. The government has also focused on welfare measures for students and women, relief for farmers, and the promotion of investment. However, the administration has faced criticism from opposition leaders. Udhayanidhi Stalin of the DMK has accused the government of renaming existing DMK schemes, while AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami has argued that the government lacks the experience necessary to protect the state's interests regarding the Cauvery water dispute.

Issues regarding corruption have been framed differently by the reporting outlets. A center-leaning source reports that visible corruption has declined because the new political class lacks the established systems and skills required to organize graft. In contrast, a center-right source highlights allegations from BJP leader K Annamalai, who claims that some ministers are demanding kickbacks of 2 percent to 4 percent from government contractors.

Other challenges facing the government include the aftermath of a September 2025 stampede in Karur that killed 41 people, which is currently under CBI probe. Additionally, the government continues to navigate the Cauvery water dispute with Karnataka, with Chief Minister Vijay expressing a preference for direct talks while the state simultaneously approaches the Supreme Court for its share of water.
