Chief Raoni Metuktire, 94, has been diagnosed with cancer of the digestive system and is currently receiving palliative care. The announcement was made on Monday, October 14, by the institute that bears his name. The Kayapó leader is receiving home assistance in Peixoto de Azevedo, Mato Grosso, near his Amazonian village. The institute clarified that palliative care is intended to ensure the best possible quality of life and avoid aggressive treatments given his advanced age.
Raoni faced several health complications this year that required hospitalizations in Mato Grosso and São Paulo. He was admitted to the Hospital São Paulo (Unifesp) on June 19 with high intestinal obstruction and aspirative pneumonia. During his stay, he underwent surgery to restore intestinal transit and two procedures to control digestive hemorrhages. He was discharged in stable condition on July 15.
His care currently involves a combination of public health services, specialized professionals, and spiritual support from trusted pajés to respect Mẽbêngôkre culture. Raoni is internationally recognized as a leading voice for the protection of the Amazon rainforest and indigenous territories.
