CIA Director John Ratcliffe traveled to Moscow on Tuesday for an unannounced visit to meet with Russian intelligence officials. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed the visit on Wednesday, stating that while Ratcliffe had contacts with security services, he did not meet with President Vladimir Putin. Peskov noted that President Putin was briefed on the outcome of the talks and described intelligence contacts as a positive phenomenon that often continues during difficult periods in bilateral relations, though he added it was premature to say if the visit would help resolve the profound crisis between the two nations.
President Donald Trump described the trip as semi routine in an interview with Glenn Beck. Trump stated that something may come out of the visit and expressed a desire to see the war in Ukraine end. He explicitly denied theories that the visit was intended to warn the Kremlin about NATO red lines or to discuss sanctions regarding Iran.
The visit was first detected by journalists and flight tracking data showing a US military C-17 transport plane landing at Moscow's Vnukovo airport. Reports indicate that the US government asked Ukraine to suspend strikes on Moscow and St. Petersburg while the delegation was present. This marks the first known visit by a CIA director to Moscow since November 2021, when William Burns traveled to warn Russia against invading Ukraine.
