A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Colombia on August 10, with the epicenter located more than 100 kilometers below the municipality of San José del Palmar. The disaster affected more than 154,000 families and caused significant damage to housing, buildings, and roads in the western part of the country. More than 28,000 businesses nationwide reported damages, including 9,300 in Valle del Cauca. The Colombian Geological Service has since reported over 300 replicas, including two tremors that occurred less than 30 minutes apart in the Chocó region. Infrastructure failures have extended to telecommunications, with the Chocó department experiencing the highest levels of mobile network unavailability. In response to the crisis, the Colombian Association of Hospitals and Clinics has requested a financial shock plan from Health Minister Ana María Vesga. The association is seeking liquidity tools, soft credits for reconstruction, and priority resource transfers to prevent operational crises in healthcare facilities that lost capacity due to the sismo.
