Conflict Erupts Between Supreme Court Justices Over Master Case and Financial Ties

A conflict has emerged between Supreme Court Justices Alexandre de Moraes and André Mendonça regarding the Master case and the bankrupt banker Daniel Vorcaro. Justice Mendonça is seeking the public release of dialogues between Justice Moraes and Vorcaro currently held by the Federal Police. In response, Justice Moraes seeks to investigate illegal initiatives involving Justice Mendonça. Court President Edson Fachin has noted that the defense strategy for Vorcaro is to obtain the nullity of the entire process and its evidence, which would potentially collapse what is described as the largest financial fraud in history.

Questions regarding financial ethics have also surfaced concerning the Iter, a private educational institution created by Justice Mendonça in 2024. The institute has received 11.5 million reais in public funds through 68 non-bid contracts with agencies across 15 states. This follows a similar model established by Justice Gilmar Mendes with the IDP, an institute co-founded by current Prosecutor General Paulo Gonet. While the law permits magistrates to teach, reports indicate that six of the ten Supreme Court ministers receive payments that exceed the constitutional salary ceiling. Justices Edson Fachin, Cármen Lúcia, Dias Toffoli, and Cristiano Zanin are identified as those who do not receive these additional payments.
