The Congress party won the elections for the posts of Legislative Assembly Speaker and Legislative Council Chairman in Karnataka on Friday. G S Patil was elected Speaker via a voice vote after the BJP and JD(S) boycotted the proceedings. Saleem Ahmed was elected Legislative Council Chairman, defeating BJP nominee P H Pujar with 38 votes to 30. Ahmed, a senior legislator first elected in 1996, stated that the post belongs to the House rather than any party.
