Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš apologized on Sunday after picking flowers in a protected area on Lysá hora, a mountain in eastern Czechia. Babiš posted a video to Facebook showing him hiking with a small bunch of flowers, which he later laid at a monument on the 1,324 meter peak. He stated that the gesture was intended to remember a late colleague from his ANO movement. Babiš noted that he would pay a fine if he had broken any laws.
Babiš was accompanied on the hike by two ministers, ANO politicians, and supporters. An environmental expert told local media that the flowers picked were common species, specifically narrowleaved willowherb and Fuchs ragwort. The expert indicated that Babiš was unlikely to face punishment because picking these specific species is not a problem, even within a national park.
