As of August 12, 110 foreign nationals wanted for crimes overseas were residing in South Korea, according to data provided by the Korean National Police Agency to Rep. Kim Jun-hwan of the ruling Democratic Party. Chinese nationals represented the largest share with 40 individuals on Interpol notices, accounting for 36 percent of the total. This was followed by 19 individuals from Uzbekistan and 17 from Mongolia.
Fraud was identified as the most common offense with 47 cases. Another 29 cases were categorized as other crimes, which included sex trafficking, confinement, and kidnapping. Other reported offenses included assault, theft, drugs, and traffic law violations.
To address the issue, the Korean National Police Agency increased its dedicated workforce from 22 to 64 personnel this year. This expansion contributed to an increase in repatriations, rising from 13 last year to 24 between January and August of this year. Police stated that improved international cooperation has also aided in the arrest of South Korean criminals who fled abroad, noting that Chinese authorities repatriated 192 South Korean fugitives last year.
