Death Toll from Philippine Ferry Fire Rises to 76

The death toll from a ferry fire off the coast of Palawan province in the Philippines has risen to 76, according to the Philippine Coast Guard. Search teams recovered 41 additional charred bodies from the M/V June Aster on Saturday, leaving 13 people still missing. A total of 43 survivors have been rescued from the water. The vessel was sailing from Manila to Coron with 132 to 134 passengers and crew when a blaze engulfed the lower decks on Wednesday evening, approximately 2.2 kilometers from its destination.

Investigators and the Maritime Industry Authority reported that survivors heard successive explosions before flames spread rapidly through the passenger areas. Commodore Noemi Cayabyab, a spokesperson for the Philippine Coast Guard, noted that wind may have contributed to the speed of the fire and that some passengers jumped into the water without life jackets. Forensic teams and local police are currently using personal belongings and DNA matching to identify the victims. The Coast Guard has expanded search operations to coastal communities in Mindoro to locate any remaining survivors who may have drifted with the currents.

Maritime officials are reviewing safety procedures and the actions of the ship captain. Commodore Cayabyab stated that there is definitely liability regarding the vessel's command given the number of missing persons. The ferry operator, Atienza Interisland Ferries, has committed to full transparency and is providing assistance to affected families. This incident is the latest in a series of deadly maritime accidents in the Philippine archipelago, where many travelers rely on poorly regulated boats.
