A massive glacial collapse along the border of Nepal and China has killed at least 955 people and left nearly 4,500 missing. The disaster occurred on Wednesday, August 26, when a wall of water, mud, and debris swept through the Rasuwa district of Nepal and the Gyirong border post in Tibet. Authorities in Nepal reported 939 deaths, while 16 deaths were recorded on the Chinese side. In India, at least 17 bodies were recovered from rivers downstream.
Rescue operations are currently focused on several hydropower project sites where over 600 workers are believed to be trapped in collapsed tunnels. International teams from India, China, South Korea, and Australia are assisting the Nepalese military in using explosives and drones to clear debris. South Korea has dispatched a 44 member emergency relief team to search for nine of its missing nationals. In some areas, the scale of the destruction was so absolute that the landscape has been described as looking like the moon.
Amid the devastation, some individual stories of survival have emerged. In the town of Bidur, a school headmaster saved over 900 students by evacuating the campus 14 minutes before a wall of water destroyed the school. However, the humanitarian crisis remains severe. The UN estimates that 65,000 people urgently need water and sanitation support. Because morgues have been overwhelmed, authorities have begun burying unidentified bodies in mass graves after collecting DNA samples.
Prime Minister Balendra Shah has called the event unimaginable and heartbreaking. The disaster has caused significant infrastructure damage, including the destruction of bridges and power plants, and has sparked concerns about the future of tourism in the region. In Hong Kong, the Nepalese community has organized fundraisers to support relief efforts in their homeland.
