A massive flash flood and landslide triggered by a glacial collapse on the border between Nepal and Tibet has killed hundreds of people and left over 1,400 missing. Death toll estimates vary across reports: some sources place the number of deceased at 538 in Nepal and five in China, while others report the total has risen to 584. The disaster occurred on Wednesday, sending a torrent of rock, ice, and mud through the Rasuwa district of Nepal and the Gyirong border crossing in Tibet. The United States Geological Survey attributed the event to a glacial collapse that triggered a vast flow of icy debris.
Rescue operations were temporarily suspended on Friday after a debris dam formed a lake in Tibet that began to overflow, creating risks of secondary flooding. Authorities in both Nepal and China later resumed search efforts after determining the risk was manageable. The disaster has significantly impacted foreign nationals, including British, Indian, and South Korean citizens. Reports indicate that many of the missing were Hindu pilgrims traveling to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar. In South Korea, nine workers involved in a hydropower project remain missing after their facilities were swept away.
International aid is flowing into the region. The European Union pledged 2 million euros, and the United Nations and World Health Organization have provided emergency funding and medical supplies. India has delivered nearly 50 tons of emergency equipment, and China is coordinating financial aid and supplies to Kathmandu. In Tibet, President Xi Jinping chaired a meeting to direct rescue work and called for stronger monitoring of glacier lakes.
