Defense Rests in Trial of Massachusetts Mother Accused of Killing Three Children

The defense has rested its case in the trial of Lindsay Clancy, a 36 year old former nurse accused of murdering her three children in January 2023. Clancy is charged with three counts of first degree murder for the deaths of her children: Cora, age five; Dawson, age three; and Callan, eight months old. While Clancy does not deny that she strangled her children, she has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. The defense argues that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis, a rare and serious mental health condition, and was unable to conform her conduct to the law or distinguish right from wrong.

Testimony from the defense included forensic psychiatrist Dr. Phillip Resnick, who testified that Clancy experienced a command hallucination and a delusion of influence. Resnick stated that Clancy believed she was doing her children a favor by taking them to heaven. Other defense witnesses, including psychologist Paul Zeizel, testified that Clancy suffered from bipolar disorder and postpartum psychosis. Conversely, prosecutors argue that Clancy made a calculated and meticulous decision to kill her children. They contend that she manipulated her medical providers and was capable of discerning right from wrong at the time of the crimes.

Following the defense's rest on Friday, prosecutors began presenting rebuttal witnesses. The trial has drawn significant public attention, including groups of women gathering outside the courthouse to show support for the defendant. If convicted, Clancy could face life in prison. If the jury finds she is not criminally responsible, she will likely be committed to a psychiatric hospital. Clancy, who was partially paralyzed after jumping from a second floor window during the incident, attended the proceedings in a wheelchair.
