A plane carrying Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy was delayed on the runway in Moldova after authorities closed the country's airspace due to a drone alert. The incident occurred on Tuesday as Zelenskiy was traveling to Oslo for the funeral of King Harald V of Norway. Moldovan officials stated that two Russian drones entered their airspace; one landed in a field north of the capital and triggered a fire, while the second entered Romanian airspace before returning to Moldova and crashing.
Discrepancies emerged regarding the level of danger posed to the presidential aircraft. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere told public broadcaster NRK that Zelenskiy's plane was almost hit by a drone during takeoff. However, a center right source cited flight data and official sources to argue that there was no near miss. That report stated the drone crashed approximately 160 kilometers away from the airport and was at an altitude of 9,000 meters while the plane was still on the runway. A source from the Ukrainian presidential office told AFP that the risk had been exaggerated.
Moldovan President Maia Sandu condemned the intrusions as a serious threat to lives. The Kremlin stated that there was no threat to the aircraft. Zelenskiy eventually arrived in Oslo to attend the funeral and hold talks with Norwegian officials regarding military aid.
