Dutch Minister Moves to Revoke License of Right-Wing Broadcaster Ongehoord Nederland

Dutch Minister of Education, Culture and Science Rianne Letschert has announced the start of a procedure to revoke the broadcasting license of Ongehoord Nederland (ON!). The minister described this as the heaviest tool available to her, stating that broadcasters using taxpayer money must follow clear rules. The decision follows a positive recommendation from the Commissariaat voor de Media and a request for intervention from the Dutch Public Broadcasting organization (NPO).

Minister Letschert cited a pattern of shortcomings as the basis for the move, including structural mismanagement, a lack of financial transparency, conflicts of interest, and failure to comply with editorial statutes. While the minister emphasized that the content of the programming was not the direct reason for the decision, the Commissariaat voor de Media identified a turning point after the broadcaster aired a fragment of an antisemitic speech by Adolf Hitler, which was discussed in a positive context as a struggle against globalism.

This action is considered unprecedented in the Dutch public system. Ongehoord Nederland has vowed that it will not simply accept the decision. The broadcaster may continue to air programs for now, as the announcement is the first step in a process that allows the network to respond before a final decision is made. The broadcaster also retains the right to challenge the revocation in court.
