Dyson has launched the CameraJet, a high tech electric toothbrush and flosser that uses an integrated camera to monitor cleaning in real time. Unveiled by founder James Dyson at an event in Paris, the device features a 100k pixel macro lens camera and a machine learning algorithm trained on 470,000 dental images. The system, which Dyson calls Gap Optical Targeting, analyzes images at 28 frames per second to detect gaps between teeth. When a gap is identified, the device releases a conical jet of mouth rinse from an internal 12.5 milliliter tank to remove plaque. This process occurs within 100 milliseconds.

The CameraJet utilizes variable sonic oscillation to prevent bristles from stalling under pressure. It connects to the MyDyson app via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, allowing users to view live footage of their gums and teeth. To ensure the camera lens remains clear, Dyson is selling a companion non foaming toothpaste and mouth rinse. The device includes a docking station that recharges the battery and refills the mouth rinse tank in three seconds. A radio frequency identification tag in the brush head notifies the user when it is time for a replacement.

Dyson claims the product removes up to 72 percent more plaque than market leading electric toothbrushes in hard to reach areas, a figure based on laboratory tests using a proxy plaque developed with the National University of Singapore. The toothbrush is priced at 420 pounds. While some reports highlight the engineering innovation, others note that the British Dental Association suggests that expensive gadgets are not a substitute for a proper brushing routine and following professional dental advice.
